Roles and responsibilities.

Charming Heroes in romance novels are primarily required to deal with love which includes diagnosis, treatment and aftercare.  The scope of practice and speciality of the individual Charming Hero will vary according to where the author takes the story, but most will undergo heart surgery of varied complexity.

Becoming a Charming Hero.

This is a Charming Hero Blog Hop – so you’ll find plenty of heroes
but are you aware of the training involved to become a Charming Hero?

Here's a blueprint of the course romance authors put them through.

Picture
Focus of practice and course length.

All genres pertinent to the prospective Charming Hero applying for this course will be considered, including (but not specific to) contemporary, historical, paranormal, erotic romance, fantasy, category and the younger Charming Heroes from young adult fiction.

Dependant on the applicants’ ability to recognise that there can be a Happy Ever After in some novels, this course could take up to 10,000 words (short story), up to 40,000 words (novella), 55,000 words (usually category, particularly if course is taken in conjunction with an experienced Harlequin Mills & Boon author), and beyond to 100,000 words (single title or series).
Requisite Traits.
Picture
Heroic deeds (see below for further information on deemed heroism), a deadly smile, humour, patience, a firm and broad set of shoulders and a shown ability to sit quietly reading a newspaper while your loved one shops for shoes. (Please note – the latter does not advance your heroic deeds skills but previous experience in this sector will be taken into account.)
Salary expectation.

Does love really have a price? Please go back to the top of this blog and re-read.

Ongoing tuition.

This is available (although not deemed necessary by those who have successfully completed this course) and includes reminders of the basics:

She needs that many shoes, her hair is tumbled not messy and her bottom is never too big.

Birthdays – these are important and care must be taken over the gift.

Anniversaries – forget these and you can may need to re-sit the entire course.

Flowers – are not just for birthdays and anniversaries, they can be used at any time of the day for no
seeming reason.

And remember -  you are a man and have every right to portray your maleness within the bounds of your role and show the protection, honour and value you carry with you at heart - and your lovely heroine needs to remember this too!
Heroism / Heroic deeds.
"Although we find it true that heroism is in the eye of the beholder, we do acknowledge that people’s beliefs about heroes tend to follow a systematic pattern. After polling a number of people, we discovered that heroes tend to have eight traits,
which we call The Great Eight. These traits are smart, strong, resilient, selfless, caring, charismatic, reliable, and inspiring. It’s unusual for a hero to possess all eight of these characteristics, but most heroes have a majority of them."

(Scott T. Allison & George R. Goethals, "Our Definition of 'Hero,'" 2011)

We romance authors welcome expressions of interest in this course, however,
those who dismiss love in any form whatsoever, be it humanitarian, animal orientated or who just have a general lack of care for fellow earth dwellers need not apply.

My Charming Hero

Picture

My charming hero is Dr. Ethan Granger from The House on Burra Burra Lane.

He's a veterinarian, a carpenter, a country man at heart and he thinks he has everything in life he needs (although he's finding it hard to get over his  difficult upbringing and bad-boy youth - which proves exceptionally difficult when he meets bubbly city-girl and runaway, Samantha Walker).

He loves his ute, all animals big and small and has respect for those in his small-town community (usually).  He's tall - 6ft 4 easy, has broad shoulders (well at that height, he'd look a bit odd without them!), sandy, wind-ruffled hair, a slow-blooming smile and a generous heart.

He graduated from this course with Escape Publishing on 1 June 2013.

You can purchase his story from some great eRetailers by clicking on the book cover.
