Juanita Kees came knocking on my country manor door!

14/4/2013

Picture
Juanita Kees. A jewel of a writer with a jillion ideas for stories that will send you on a suspenseful journey. She can sort out the jiggery-pokery in your manuscript too (she’s also an editor, by Jonas).  Enough with the jabber - I've asked her to answer six questions from that list of thirteen.  Let's see how she does.

Notice how the blue on the cover of Juanita's new release Under the Hood matches the blue of my country manor door! (Just thought I'd throw that in ...)  Take it away Juanita:

Are there cowboys or country manors in any of your stories?

Well, no cowboys yet…but I’m sure I can find one and sadly no country manors unless you count TJ’s Perth Hills property with its towering trees, steep driveway and babbling creek?

(TJ’s Perth Hills property is country manor enough for me: you passed that test, Juanita. Please continue.)

Will you tell us about yourself and what genre(s) you love writing?

I was born in Port Elizabeth, South Africa and am now proudly Australian. I’m living my dream as an author reading and writing romantic fiction, and chatting to my fellow authors about their publishing journeys.  I work a ‘real’ job three days a week and spend the rest of my time avoiding housework by writing, editing or proofreading at Kees2Create. I’m mother to three boys (hubby included, his toys are just a little more expensive).

(Housework? Are we supposed to do it?)

What writing project did you put aside to answer these questions?

Under Cover of Dark – Detective Mark Johnson’s story.  You met Detective Mark Johnson in Fly Away Peta.
He starts a murder investigation in Under the Hood.

When will Detective Mark Johnson have his chance at happiness and what’s next for the bad guys? Find out over at Romance Book Haven

(I've read a little about Detective Mark Johnson - he's  all manly, detective-like muscle and charm. If he took the weekend off from criminal affairs, he could perch on my corral fence any day ...  Sorry, Juanita! Next question ...)

Are you fun to go on holiday with?

Not if you ask my family! I’m a pretty grumpy traveller. Once I’ve reached the destination I’m okay.

(Yup … me too.)

What kind of research do you do for your stories?

I love small town characters and stories. On Sundays we’re usually out on the motorbike, touring WA towns close by. I’ll see a house or a farm or character that spurs the story on and then I Google or contact their tourist bureau or library for info. There’s always someone willing to talk about the history of their town.

(Note: doesn't do housework; motorbike gal - How do I achieve this?)

What were the challenges (research, literary, psychological, and logistical) in bringing your current story to life?

I wanted to get the facts straight. The teenagers were easy—I have two—but getting the murder and drug details needed a lot of research. It’s a pretty scary world out there :)

(Smart writers do smart research! )

No jiggery-pokery there. She did it, by Jonas!

Thank you, Juanita Kees, my first intrepid guest. I'm so glad you popped in. Take care on that motorbike and make sure hubby holds on tight behind you!

As always, Jennie recommends readers purchase (or pre-order) the titles of
their dreams and support the writers who have taken the time to answer
these questions. Writing is hard work and not for the faint-hearted - but
so joyful for the reader.  What would we do without books (and  writers)?

Feel free to leave a pleasant comment, we’d love to hear from you!

I couldn't agree more Lily Malone, I am lucky to have had the wonderful and lovely Juanita as my first guest. Thanks for popping in (and I hope you're looking at those 13 questions for when it's your turn!)

I'm honoured to be your first guest. I can't wait until it's Lily's turn. She has a wicked sense of humour :D

Sounds like I might need a 'naughty' table somewhere on the terrace (that should keep things sparkling!) Diversity and humour! Don't you just love both?

Hi Chantal, thank you :D

Well done, gals!
Lovely opening interview and great set of questions, Jennie, and good to learn more about your writing sources, Juanita. Love the sound of your weekend motorbike rides. Would love to own a big beautiful bike to do the same. Look forward to reading this each week.

Hi Susanne :D
It's a great place to be alone in your head. The longer rides between towns are awesome for planning scenes. I've got my bluetooth paired to my phone and I use the voice recorder to record any ground breaking ideas (ha,ha) so I don't forget them - sorted!

What a great idea, Juanita! Just about to put current h/h on a motorbike so I'm having to dredge back a long way for the sensory memories. It was so much fun, but pre-husband. (Knew I should have looked for a guy in leathers!)

Great interview.
Grumpy? Who you Juanita? I never thought. :)
I use to go to school with a South African. Her family didn't like it here and went back. They were a lovely family.

Hi Suzanne,

LOL, yes I do have the odd grumpy day :D

Great first interview, Jennie! Looks like I know where to go if I ever need motorbike riding scenes!

Juanita Kees link
13/4/2013 02:12:50 pm

LOL, Kerrie :D It's amazing how different the scenery looks when you're clinging on for dear life through the twisting and turning bends in the road!

Venetia
14/4/2013 02:11:44 am

Hi Juanita,
I love your method of research and taking notes! Some country houses just ooze stories and characters, don't they?
But tell me how you find out about police procedures and murder and such like! One hopes you don't get so hands on in that aspect of research ...

Juanita Kees link
14/4/2013 02:27:20 am

Hi Venetia,
I've always said I'll be a 'person of interest' if ever they take my computer away! They'll find many links to posts on how to poison someone slowly or how to judge a death by the angle of a bullet. :D

Great idea and great post - hopping over to read the next one :-)

Hi Maggie! See you over at the next one :D

Jennie Jones

Thank you Suzanne, Susanne, Kerrie, Venetia, Chantal and Maggie for leaving such pleasant (and interesting) comments! I think all we writers would be 'persons of interest' if people got hold of the research on our computers. I think they'd be stumped by the variations though ... we'd be branded as multi-personality types :)
Thank you all for popping in.

Sorry, I'm supposed to post a comment? I've been busy building a corral fence - just in case. Great interview, I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. Under the Hood is on my kindle, waiting, waiting....

I'm intrigued, S E - building a corral fence? Hope you get a moment to read Under the Hood soon :)

Jennie Jones
14/4/2013 11:04:56 am

Ooh - SE Gilchrist is hoping to find Detective Mark Johnson on my corral fence? You can't go there without reading Under the Hood because Scott Devin got there first! (Sounds like SE Gilchrist is a perfect specimen for my Country Manor Interviews - she's got the 'cowboy' thing on her mind!) Read about Scott Devin and TJ first SE and all will make sense ... Under the Hood ... Under the Hood ... Under the Hood ... :)

hahahaha - Yep, you got it. thought if I build one, he might just magically appear! But obviously I first need to read...Under the Hood. Honestly Juanita & Jennie, its on TOP of my pile. :)

I love the intrigue that comes to mind as I wonder who is knocking at your country door, Jennie. Your first guest fills the post perfectly. A motorbike gal who eschews housework and writes wonderfully enjoyable books...marvellous! Can't wait to follow Detective Mark Johnson in Under Cover of Dark, Juanita.

Hi, Sal H! Thanks for popping in, and didn't Juanita supply? I'm so glad you like her stories as much as I do. Will I have to fight you over Detective Mark? Scott Devin is pretty hot too. I may have to fight myself and make a choice!

Hi Sal :D

I'm honoured to be Jennie's first caller. I've had so much fun at the manor, I hope I get another invitation to tea!
