On The Keeper's Shelf - In at the Deep End

26/7/2017

Like you, I love a good book, but when you’re writing lots of books, it can be hard to remove yourself from the craft of writing and just sit back and devour the story. In the next few weeks I’m going to be sharing books I’ve read recently which will be on my Keeper’s Shelf because I simply devoured them and got totally lost in them.

In at the Deep End by Penelope Janu

Why It's On My Keeper's Shelf

This one gave me all the smiles and all the tender moments. There was a gentleness about so many of the characters and I fell for each of them, regardless of their plights in life or what life has thrown them. My heart particularly went to Drew, although Penelope has written his character so well that you smile when he’s on the page. Harry (Harriet) and Per are exceptionally well characterized, surprising me on many occasions! I loved both, and had to keep turning the page to discover exactly how they were going to get over everything they were placing in each other’s way. The plus for me with In at the Deep End was the setting which was interwoven beautifully with the story content. Alongside the painful issues the characters are fighting to get over, we have the environment, the beach, adventurers, ships, Antarctica, Australia, and Norway. Penelope Janu blended everything perfectly, and gave me a story I’d read again.

The Story Blurb

A quick-witted, contemporary romance about losing your cool.
What woman doesn’t love a real-life hero? Harriet Scott, for one. The fiercely independent daughter of famous adventurers, she grew up travelling the world on the environmental flagship The Watch. So when Harriet’s ship sinks in Antarctica and she has to be rescued by Commander Per Amundsen, an infuriatingly capable Norwegian naval officer and living breathing action hero, her world is turned upside down.

Like their namesakes, the original Scott and Amundsen who competed to reach the South Pole first, Per and Harriet have different ways of doing things. Per thinks Harriet is an accident waiting to happen; Harriet thinks Per is a control freak. But when Harriet realises that Per is the only one who can help her fund the new ship she desperately wants, she is forced to cooperate with him.

Per refuses to assist unless Harriet allows him to teach her to swim. But there is more to Harriet’s terrible fear of water than meets the eye. Can Harriet face her fears and come to terms with the trauma and loss of her past? And will she begin to appreciate that some risks are well worth taking—and that polar opposites can, in fact, attract?

About Penelope Janu

Picture
A few years ago, after a fulfilling career as a lawyer and legal academic, I thought it was time to start writing the kinds of stories I'd always thought up but never written down. Not coincidentally, they were also the stories that I loved to read. Stories with little to do with corporations law or conveyancing contracts, and more to do with adventure and romance and happily ever afters.

I’m lucky enough to know Penelope, and she’s the loveliest, smartest lady. We’ve chatted over email and met in person on a writing panel. So if you’re keen to take a chance on a new author, I recommend this book highly.

Looks interesting I like the cover

Hi Wendy. It's a contemporary novel, but there is quite a lot of history woven into the plot as well. My grandmother was a great fan of Robert Falcon Scott, the second man to make it to the South Pole. Good luck in the draw!

Hi Wendy, thanks for reading the blog post. Do you like to choose a book by its cover, or the back cover story blurb, or a bit of both? I always find myself doing both, to be honest.

Gina

Hey Penelope! I always trust the good advice of Jennie ;) What has been noted here sounds like an interesting and captivating read, although anything that involves ships is going to be a winner to me! I am also loving the idea of a Keeper's Shelf! I regrettably passed on all of my books years ago to make way for kids toys and trinkets and modern technology, but want to go back to the good old book (not ipad!), this looks like a great start!

Hello, Gina! Like you, I've given away many books over the years, but there are some I will not part with. I've got a new spot on my bookshelves now for newly read Keeper stories that I know I'll read again. Many people don't like to read a book twice, but I'm not one of them. Thanks so much for popping in to the blog.

Hello Gina. I agree it's hard to juggle space when children take up so much of it. I probably keep too many books (if this is possible!) - and now I like to keep my children's favourite books as well. But so many books bring back wonderful memories and I am very reluctant to let them go. Good luck in the draw, and thank you for commenting! Penelope

This sounds like a really interesting book. I love that is sounds so different, don't think I have read a book featuring Antartica before!

Jennie Jones

It's awesome, Kerry, and is set in Australia - I just loved the other story elements and spoken of settings so much. A commander who is Norwegian, an Aussie female adventurer. It's a really lovely and poignant read.

Hi Kerry. Antarctica is a fascinating place! I'd love to go there one day. In the meantime, I enjoyed researching what the first explorers went through to get to the South Pole. And it's really interesting that small (in terms of population) countries like Australia and Norway have such important roles to play in this amazing unspoilt environment. But ... I loved writing the love story too! Good luck in the draw and thank you for commenting. Penelope
